Does Your Sensitive Heart Draw You Toward Relationships with People Who Mistreat You?

Take the Test

Millions of people suffer from what I call a "sensitive heart." A sensitive heart is not the same as having the quality of sensitivity, (though people with sensitive heart are often also highly sensitive), but rather it's more like an emotional bruise from unhealed childhood wounds. These bruises can come from anyone and stem from anything as mild as not having received enough approval all the way to severe abuse, neglect or abandonment. Unknowingly, carrying around a sensitive heart will inevitably wreak havoc in our personal and professional relationships. One of the worst consequences to our relationships is the abuser friendly syndrome -that is, the tendency to become a magnet for people who continually hurt and mistreat us and not knowing how to break the pattern. Check and see whether you might be suffering from this syndrome by answering the following questions:

  1. Do you stay in relationships (romantic, friendship or familial) even when you're being mistreated or disrespected?
  2. Do you cut people who treat you badly far too much slack?
  3. Do you gravitate toward people who would be considered mean-spirited, disrespectful, self-centered or even abusive?
  4. Do you suffer from low self-esteem?
  5. Do you feel you were mistreated in childhood?
  6. Have you had more than one intimate relationship with someone who treated you badly?
  7. Do you make excuses for people when they've hurt you, rationalizing their bad behavior?
  8. Do you have a hard time expressing your feelings or opinions?
  9. Do you ever feel undeserving of the kind of love you truly crave?
  10. Do you ever have trouble accepting and embracing support and care from loving people?

If you answered "yes" to any one of these questions, you're selling yourself short and you could certainly benefit from learning how to stop allowing others to mistreat you and finally attract the love and nurturance you deserve.
